Thyme is a genus of about 350 species of aromatic perennial herbaceous plants and sub-shrubs which can grow to 20 inches tall, in the family Lamiaceae. The name is derived from the Greek word “thymos” which means “perfume” and was used as incense in Greek temples. The Egyptians used it in the embalming process.
